Unlike many of the other martial arts, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has little use for strikes. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu relies on chokes, arm locks, and other submission holds so it can be practiced exactly the same way it would be in a real fight.
If the person you are facing is a friend who is temporarily out of his senses, you can control him without hurting him. However, if you are dealing with a threat to injure you or a loved one, you can apply a more suitable response level.
